MassMutual Term Life Insurance: What MassMutual Says and What to Check
MassMutual term life insurance offers level premiums for 10 to 30 years and a conversion option. Here's what MassMutual says and what to ask.
Short answer: MassMutual term life insurance is sold under the name MassMutual Term, which MassMutual’s brochure says “provides six different protection duration options,” including a guaranteed level premium for “10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years.” MassMutual says you can convert “all or a portion of your Term coverage” to its permanent life insurance, and its term page points you to a financial professional to apply. MassMutual doesn’t publish coverage minimums or maximums on the term pages we read, so ask about those directly.
What is MassMutual term life insurance?
MassMutual describes term this way: “With a term life insurance policy, you choose how long you would like the policy to cover you.”
The product named on MassMutual’s term page and brochure is MassMutual Term. The brochure (form LI5337) describes the policies as “non-participating, annually renewable term life insurance policies issued by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company.” MassMutual’s comparison page lists term as having “No cash value.”
If you’re new to how term works, start with what term life insurance is.
What term lengths and premium options does MassMutual offer?
MassMutual’s brochure says, “Term provides six different protection duration options, depending upon how long you need coverage.” It frames the choice as two styles:
| Feature | What MassMutual says |
|---|---|
| Level premium terms | “a guaranteed level premium for a specific number of years (e.g., 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years)” |
| Annually increasing premiums | “premiums that start out low and increase annually” |
| Premiums during the term | “your premium payments are generally guaranteed to remain the same for the term period you select” (term life page) |
| Cash value | “No cash value” (comparison page) |
| Participating? | “non-participating” (brochure) |
| Underwriting | “All policies are subject to underwriting approval and premium costs will vary” |
| States | “The products and/or certain features may not be available in all states. State variations will apply.” |

Ask which of the six options are available at your age and in your state.
How much coverage can you get, and who can apply?
The MassMutual consumer pages and brochure we read don’t list a minimum or maximum coverage amount or an issue-age range for MassMutual Term. Ask the financial professional:
- The smallest and largest amount you can apply for.
- The oldest age you can buy each term length.
- Whether any of the six duration options are closed at your age.
The age and amount ranges on MassMutual’s underwriting page (below) describe underwriting methods, not product limits.
Can you convert MassMutual term to permanent life insurance?
Yes, according to MassMutual. Its term page says, “You can convert many term life insurance policies to permanent life insurance without any medical questions or exams,” with a footnote that “Conversion periods and conditions may vary by product.”
The brochure is more specific to MassMutual Term: you have “the option to convert all or a portion of your Term coverage” to MassMutual’s permanent life insurance, which “excludes MassMutual CareChoice One and CareChoice Select.” It adds: “How long you have to convert will depend on your age and which term product you buy.”
For general context, the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says “Converting a policy will raise your premiums” and “Companies usually allow you to convert term life policies only for a time, typically until you turn 65.” Ask for the exact conversion deadline on your policy in writing. For what happens if you don’t convert, see what happens when term life insurance ends.
What riders come with MassMutual Term?
The brochure names two riders:
- Waiver of Premium Rider. It is “available at an additional cost” and “waives your policy’s premium if you become totally disabled (as defined in the rider).” The brochure also says that, with this rider, “you can still convert to our lowest premium whole life policy and transfer the rider benefit.” Ask how that works if you are already disabled.
- Accelerated Death Benefit for Terminal Illness Rider. It “is included at no additional cost.” If you are terminally ill, MassMutual says “you can receive an advance of the policy’s death benefit. These funds may be used for any purpose.” It also says, “There is an administrative and interest charge upon exercising the rider.”
How do you apply, and is there a medical exam?
MassMutual’s term page offers a link to “Contact a financial professional.” It describes four steps: Analyze, Recommend, Purchase and Review, and of the Purchase step it says, “This may require a medical exam.” The term pages we read don’t describe an online application for MassMutual Term.
MassMutual’s underwriting page describes three paths:
- Traditional underwriting. “Traditional Underwriting typically involves a physical examination and certain lab testing.”
- Algorithmic underwriting. “Algorithmic Underwriting is a streamlined method for evaluating your application.” The page’s table lists ages 17–59 and “Up to $3 million.”
- MassExpress fluidless. “MassExpress is MassMutual’s Algorithmic Underwriting program,” used “to determine eligibility for underwriting without a physical exam or labs (e.g., blood, urine or saliva).” The table lists ages 17–50 and “Up to $3 million.”
MassMutual adds that “applicants with certain medical conditions will generally not qualify for a MassExpress fluidless offer,” that “Not all eligible applicants may qualify for or receive a MassExpress offer,” and that “the risk class determined through Algorithmic Underwriting or MassExpress may be different.” It may use information from “your physicians, medical facilities, medical claims records, and pharmacy databases.”
Whichever path you’re on, the NAIC says, “It’s important to tell the truth on the application.”
Which company issues MassMutual term life insurance?
MassMutual’s term life page says: “Insurance products issued by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) (Springfield, MA 01111-0001) and its subsidiaries, C.M. Life Insurance Company and MML Bay State Life Insurance Company.” The MassMutual Term brochure says its policies are “issued by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company.” Check the company name on your application and policy.
What is MassMutual’s LifeBridge program?
LifeBridge is separate from MassMutual Term. MassMutual calls it “a unique free life insurance program” that “provides free, $50,000 ten-year life insurance policies” to eligible parents and legal guardians, and says “MassMutual pays the premiums.” Eligibility includes being “Between the ages of 19 and 42” with “total family income not less than $10,000 or more than $40,000 annually,” and the money “can be used for tuition, fees, books, campus room and board, and other educational expenses.”
What to check before you buy MassMutual term life
- Which of the six durations fit. Level for 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years, or annually increasing premiums.
- Coverage limits and issue ages. These aren’t on the pages we read, so ask.
- Your conversion deadline. MassMutual says it depends “on your age and which term product you buy.”
- What happens at the end of the level period. The NAIC suggests asking “what the premiums will be before you renew the policy.”
- Riders. Ask the added cost of Waiver of Premium and the charge on the terminal illness rider.
- Your state’s version. MassMutual says “State variations will apply.”
- Free look. The NAIC says you can get a “full refund within a certain period, usually 10 days after you receive it”; TDI says “Texas policies have a free-look period of at least 10 to 20 days.”
- Licensing and comparison. TDI says, “Make sure the agent and company are licensed to sell insurance,” “Be sure the policies you compare offer similar coverage,” and “Don’t choose a policy on price alone.”
- Affordability and current coverage. The NAIC says, “Before you buy a life insurance policy, be sure you can pay the premiums,” and “Don’t cancel your current policy until you get the new one.”
The bottom line
MassMutual Term offers six duration options, including level premiums for 10 to 30 years, a conversion option to MassMutual permanent coverage, and two named riders. MassMutual’s term page points you to a financial professional, and the purchase may require a medical exam. Get coverage limits, issue ages and the conversion deadline in writing before you decide.
