Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage: What It Is and What to Ask

Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage is a private whole life final expense policy, not a government program. What Lincoln Heritage says and what to ask.

Short answer: Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage is a final expense whole life insurance policy underwritten by Lincoln Heritage Life Insurance Company, a private insurance company. So if you’re asking “what is the Funeral Advantage program?”, it’s an insurance policy you apply for and pay premiums on, not a government benefit. Lincoln Heritage says it offers the plan to people up to age 85 in 48 states, with no medical exam but a few health questions.

What is Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage?

Lincoln Heritage describes Funeral Advantage as “a Final Expense Life Insurance Cash Benefit” and “an affordable whole life insurance policy.” Its disclosures say it is “a life insurance policy underwritten by Lincoln Heritage Life Insurance Company® on form ICC13FEAPPR.”

The company says “since 1963, Lincoln Heritage has been a company committed to doing the right thing for its policyholders,” and lists its location as Phoenix, Arizona. It also says “Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage® and Lincoln Heritage Life Insurance Company® are registered trademarks of Londen Insurance Group, Inc.”

Is the Funeral Advantage program a government program?

No. Lincoln Heritage’s own website uses the word “program” (it has a “Program Details” page), but the product is a private life insurance policy. Lincoln Heritage’s disclosures say: “Neither the U.S. government, nor any state agency is affiliated with or endorses the company or its representatives.”

How much coverage can you get?

Lincoln Heritage’s pages state the maximum in more than one way. The home page says, “Our families can get up to $35,000 in whole life coverage.” The program details page says, “Whole life benefits available up to $20,000,” and separately, “$100,000 additional benefit for accidental death available.”

Lincoln Heritage also says, “Coverage and monthly premiums depend on the benefit selected and factors such as gender, age, and health data.” Ask Lincoln Heritage which maximum applies at your age and in your state, and how much of any quoted figure is whole life coverage versus an accidental death benefit.

Are there health questions or a waiting period?

There’s no exam, but there is underwriting. Lincoln Heritage says, “No medical exam is required to apply,” and “Most applicants qualify for full, immediate coverage based on answers to just a few health questions on the application.” Its final expense page says example questions “cover the last two years of your health.”

If you don’t qualify for full coverage, Lincoln Heritage says “you may still be eligible for modified coverage, which provides limited benefits for non-accidental death during the first years.” The Funeral Advantage pages we read don’t give the exact modified-benefit terms, so ask how much is paid and for how long before you apply. For background on how full-benefit-from-day-one policies differ, see burial insurance with no waiting period.

Two more two-year rules appear in Lincoln Heritage’s disclosures:

  • Contestability: “It includes a two-year contestability period during which claims may be denied for material misstatements on the application.”
  • Suicide exclusion: “Suicide exclusion with refund of premium applies during the first two years (one year on CO, MN, MO, ND).”

The NAIC says, “It’s important to tell the truth on the application.” The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) adds that if the company learns “you gave wrong information or didn’t disclose something, it can deny payment.”

Lincoln Heritage says “Family Support Services are provided at no additional cost to every policyholder.” It says Family Support Services come through the Funeral Consumer Guardian Society (FCGS). According to Lincoln Heritage:

  • “FCGS keeps your wishes safe and secure on file.”
  • “Your loved ones get a 24-hour toll-free service number to call in time of need.”
  • The service involves “comparing up to 3 different funeral homes to find the best price available.”
  • “The FCGS is not affiliated with any religion, funeral home, cemetery, or any particular funeral approach,” and “There is never any obligation or pressure to buy anything from anyone.”

Lincoln Heritage’s home page also says the policy “includes help from a Personal Funeral Advisor® at no additional cost.”

The benefit itself is cash. Lincoln Heritage says, “Death benefits are paid to the beneficiary, who may use the proceeds for any purpose including funeral expenses,” and “Funeral Advantage is not affiliated with any particular funeral home or funeral approach.”

What to ask before you buy

  1. Your maximum coverage. Lincoln Heritage’s pages list “up to $35,000” and “up to $20,000” for whole life benefits. Ask which applies to you, at your age, in your state.
  2. Age limits. Lincoln Heritage says “up to 85 years old.” Ask the youngest age at which you can apply.
  3. Full or modified coverage. Ask which you qualify for, and, if modified, exactly what is paid for non-accidental death in each of the first years and when the full benefit begins.
  4. The accidental death benefit. Ask whether it’s included or extra, what it costs, and what it covers.
  5. Cash value. The pages we read don’t describe cash value for Funeral Advantage. Ask whether the policy builds cash value and whether you can borrow against it.
  6. The refund period. The pages we read don’t state a free-look period. The NAIC says you can usually return a new policy “for a full refund within a certain period, usually 10 days after you receive it,” and TDI says Texas policies have a free-look period “of at least 10 to 20 days.”
  7. The application questions. Read every health question before you sign, and answer truthfully.
  8. Licensing. TDI says, “Make sure the agent and company are licensed to sell insurance.”
  9. Affordability. The NAIC says, “Before you buy a life insurance policy, be sure you can pay the premiums.” Lincoln Heritage says coverage can’t be cancelled “as long as premiums are paid,” so ask what happens if you miss a payment.
  10. A comparison. TDI says, “Don’t choose a policy on price alone.” Compare at least one other final expense policy with similar coverage.
  11. Your existing coverage. The NAIC says, “Don’t cancel your current policy until you get the new one.”

The bottom line

Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage is a private whole life final expense policy, not a government program. Lincoln Heritage says it’s available up to age 85 in 48 states (not New York or Washington), with no medical exam but a few health questions, and with modified coverage for some applicants. Confirm your maximum coverage and whether you’d get full or modified benefits before you buy.
